Scenes from the NHEC 4th Annual Conference,

NHEC President Roger Rivera (far right) and NHEC Chairman Manuel Hernandez
(far left) presented an award at the NHEC 1999 Conference to the National Park
Services’ Vidal Martinez, Superintendent, Sagamore Hill National Park. Robert
Stanton, the first African American Director of the National Park Service (NPS),
spoke at the Conference. NPS is a major supporter of the NHEC, and signed a “Memorandum
of Understanding” with NHEC at the Conference.

An educational – and fun – part of each Conference are the environmental “site tours”, held for the students. Here, students select from a dozen environmental facilities (such as national parks, laboratories, wildlife refuges, etc.) and on the Sunday of the Conference travel to the environmental site of their choice for a day long guided program.

The coastline and tidepools of the Pacific Ocean near San Francisco were just one of many site visits offered to students.

The Conference
offers over 25 workshops and general sessions on a wide range of environmental
issues.

NHEC signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the 1999 Conference, committing the FWS to a variety of joint projects with NHEC.
